Acts as the local enforcement agency for administering the State's Uniform Construction Code. Also provides enforcement for certain chapters of the General Code of Washington Township.

Promulgated for 1978, the Uniform Construction Code mandates the rules and regulations of new construction, change of use, and to insure adequate maintenance of buildings and structure and to protect the health, safety and welfare of the people.

The State of New Jersey, Department of Community Affairs, formally adopts the various codes used throughout the state. The current adopted codes are:

• 2000 International Building Code*
• 2000 International Residential Code*
• 2002 Natinal Electric Code
• 2000 National Standard Plumbing Code
• 2000 International Fuel Gas Code
• 2000 International Mechainical Code
• CABO 1995 Energy Code (residential)
• ASHRAE 90.1-1999 Energy Code (commercial)
• ANSI 117.1-1998 Accessiblity code in conjunction with the NJ Barrier Free Code, The Rehabilitation Subcode and the Administrative Code known as the Uniform Construction Code.

For the new millennium, the three model code organizations have merged on Januaray 21, 2003 into one code organization and one model code group which will formulate all codes used throughout the country.
